As a personal trainer, you aren’t just responsible for motivating your clients to be their best possible self, you have to do the same for yourself. Leading by example is one of the strongest, most powerful motivational tactics you can use when you work in the health and fitness industry. Think of it this way: To your clients, your role as a personal trainer is to inspire the people around you to push themselves and, in order for you to do that, you need to push yourself before you can effectively inspire and motivate your clients.
Lead by Example
In order for your clients to develop a healthy mindset towards eating and getting enough physical activity, it’s essential that you are following two simple unspoken rules:
- Are you maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet?
- Are you in optimal shape and still working towards new and evolving goals?
To your clients, these two things are important when looking for a personal trainer; if you are failing to lead by example, you likely won’t have the clientele you could have if you were living up to your fullest potential.
There are a few simple ways you can maintain your own health and fitness while on the clock. If you are training in a gym, make time for a quick workout in between clients (if your schedule allows). If you happen to work outside of a gym, take your client on an interval run or trail hike. These are a few of the simple ways that you can stay active and use your work environment to your advantage.
Formulate Your Own Healthy Meal Plan
When you’re dedicated to shaping your clients’ healthy habits, it’s easy to fall into a ‘trap’ and neglect your own. If you’re short on time, or you put your own health on the back burner, you could potentially decrease your own physical and mental performance. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to mean putting much thought or time towards meal planning; instead, try incorporating ‘superfoods’ into your diet so your body stays energized and satisfied all day long.

Find Your Own Personal Mantra
The outlook you have on life and share with your clients can either negatively or positively impact their own personal perception. For your methods to resonate with your clients, you need to ensure that you’re helping them to stay positive even when they are facing challenging obstacles.
You may know by now that there are psychological benefits to working out and staying healthy with a well-balanced diet – why not accompany those boosted endorphins with your own personal mantra? When you share your personal mantra with your clients, you will help them stay motivated during and after each workout. Before you know it they will go from self doubt to unstoppable.
